This all steel Ultra rare Canadian only model Mercury ’114′ Business coupe. Ron built this ‘Coup-Eh’ for himself and after a few years of enjoyment and new creative ideas crowding the shop this Beauty was sold to a personal friend of the Box’s who enjoyed and loved the car immensely. This Coupe has seen numerous road trips to many NHRA Street Rod sanctioned events throughout the US, from Daytona Rod Run to Pigeon Forge Turkey Run, and many parts between.
This Mercury is powered by Fords iconic V8 351 Windsor, Aluminum intake,4 Barrel Carb, electronic ignition and shorty headers. Matched tO A C4 Automatic transmission and continues with a 9 inch rear end, rear diff from a Lincoln Versailles adding stopping power as it was factory power rear disc brakes.
This all Steel Henry body is found in excellent condition. This example is a Canadian/ E\WIndsor only built body and model, unique to Canada was the Mercury ’114′ Business Coupe. The 114 Model was unique to Canada and was 4 inches shorter than the US built and sold Business coupes. The 114 represented the wheel base in inches. The Canadian 114 Coupe is ultra rare today as in 1948 they only built 126 Model 114 in Canada.
Thanks to the already sexy lines of this coupe, the car has a chopped roof line look although it is stock with the only body modifications being shaved door and trunk handles, and tastefully frenched in headlights and power antenna. The rear fenders where originally bolted on with welting between the builder choose to weld the fenders on to keep the smooth and clean look flowing through the slopie rear roof line and stout rear fender look. Otherwise a very clean stock all steel body. Factory bumpers where shortened again for a cleaner tighter look as well as blind bolted and triple plated chrome. The Canadian 114 boasted a different grill than its US built cousin, the 114 had the addition of the cast and plated Mercury Mans head in the center of the grill , a super cool look, the builder took the time to add mini fibre optic lights to the Mercury God of speeds eyes so they illuminate at night…. again super subtle and Super Cool !
With and outstanding show quality high gloss clear coat finish this Coupe presentation is stunning. Finished in the most stunning, rich yet subtle colour combination Platinum Metallic over Pearlescent Pearl White. Not only the condition of the finish as well as excellent colour choices the artistic decision to break the two tone not on the body line nor on the factory stainless belt line but between the two, keeps the eye moving.
The interior configuration was left as would be from new with one bench seat with large storage area behind along with a full package tray. These cars where designed for travelling business men travelling with samples, wares and luggage, this to Doctors who would travel with medical supplies etc. The large package tray would hold the top hat and overcoats. Today this allows for ample storage for the long distance tours along with the cavernous rear trunk found in this coupe. This seating set up along with the tilt steering allows for super comfortable seating/driving position for both driver and passenger, could comfortable drive this Coupe all day long down the interstate with ease and comfort.
The interior was fulll and professionally reupholstered by a high quality trim shop and it shows ! Finished in a rich dark maroon including seat, door panels all side and kick trim along with package tray and a removable curtain between rear seat and stowage area. All extremely and tastefully don and shows as new today. Carpets all in matching maroon cut and trimmed to fit and all edges bound. Trunk was fully trimmed in Maroon along with trimmed and bound carpet including spare tire cover, attention to detail here as well.
The Deco Style dash was left as stock aside from a few updates. New gauges installed, – Fuel, Amperage, Temp and Oil where replaced internally with original bezels/cluster still place. Original Speedo and original Clock (working) still inset in factory dash, with proper speaker grill and MERCURY 114 emblem found on glove box door as new. There is the addition of a stereo and subtle and tastefully paced speakers allow for great cruising tunes. The addition of Vintage under dash air condition and heat AC blows Ice Cold !! Power windows are q great addition along with magnetek operated door poppers to open doors remotely.The updated steering column offers tilt wheel and the tastefully added Aluminum Billet Bango style steering wheel set off this Mercury interior.
This Professional high quality build offers the un-mistakable look and design of a an early post war Mercury while offering customs updates along with ample power, late model handling and all the needed creature comforts to allow for sheer enjoyment. Either an evening cruise to the ice cream shop, or a long distance tour to the next NHRA show this Mercury is a crowd pleaser.
